10.5 vs Dana 80

The last couple diesel power challenges have got me thinking...

I keep wondering if I should do a dana80 swap, seems like every year there is someone who spins and axle tube, or snaps a pinion shaft or something on a ford. Hate to have a bullet proof truck other than something like that

couple trucks one fast one not

Re: Diesel Power Challenge 2010*

You could weld your center section to your axle tubes.

With nitrous you're pretty close to my power range on my previous setup and I have not had a problem yet out of mine.... 200k miles on the drivetrain.

Re: Diesel Power Challenge 2010*

Well his axle tubes were not welded, his ladderbar setup was bolted to the frame and the C-channel was affixed with Ubolts to the axle tube. He has since upgraded that setup and also went with a Dana 80.

I'm not telling you not to get a dana 80... I'd like to have one as well... but your Sterling should work for what you do with it.

Re: 10.5 vs Dana 80

The Dana 80 was just a thought, I know we dont hear about breakage very often, but my truck is as heavy as it gets with a 10.5 under it, with big tires to boot.

I dont even know what it takes to swap an 80, im assuming its pretty straight forward? Just dont know about the axle width or anything like that. Welding mine is comming soon i know that much, what else is needed to make them strong/stronger?

What is wrong with bolting the ladder bar to the frame? Is there a different/better way to attach it?Just curious as I need some and was thinking of making a set and really only want to do it once. Thanks..

Send a PM to DrSpeed on here for the D80 swap. He has done it to his truck.

Scott

Usually you have a shackle at the front if you have two fixed points on the axle. Scott's were solid mounted and he ripped them right out of the frame. It was pretty catastrophic.

He now uses 4 bolts per frame mount instead of two.
