Towing with a 460?

I'm looking at possibly getting a 460 for a second truck. How well can one of these tow with either 3.55 or 4.10 rears? I live in a pretty hilly area also.

Re: Towing with a 460?

When I was running my pool company I had a 96 f250 rc/lb 4x4 auto with 4.10's and it would pull the trailer with the skidloader fine. It was ok at plowing. Trans sucked and at 100k Id been through three of em. In July of 03 I got a 2004 f250 rc/lb xl 4x4 auto with a 5.4 in it as a second/replacement for the 96. I thought I could use it that fall to pull a second trailer with trees on it(we sold spruce/pine trees and planted them). I couldnt put the skiddy, the backhoe attachment, and the trees on the trailer and pull them with the 96. The 5.4 would pull ALL of it though. I kind of abandoned hope in the big block at that point. Sure the 5.4 you had to really get into the pedal to get the load moving but the 460 was the same deal. The 460 just makes more noise which leads you to think you're going for some reason. They are still decent trucks. It'll make you appreciate your diesel a lot more. Oh and the fuel mileage is gonna be in gallons per mile towing. Seriously its almost obscene towing heavy.

Re: Towing with a 460?

I'm only really looking into a gas option because it'll be a daily driver (less to maintain) and the cost of an equal 7.3 powered truck in my area is considerably higher. The only time it would be towing HEAVY is when it tows the truck in my sig to some truck pulls which would seriously be 5-10 a year and not incredibly far distances.

Re: Towing with a 460?

Yeah the cost for a diesel is higher and after towing a 7k lb truck on a trailer with that gasser you'll know why. ha ha..

I do know when the powerstrokes were new people were saying that you could put 40k miles on the gasser before realizing the initial price difference between the two.

Re: Towing with a 460?

Oh I know it'll be a chore towing the truck with a gasser, I'm still on the hunt for a cheap 7.3 for this reason but I've seen some very nice 460 trucks go fairly cheap lately.

Re: Towing with a 460?

You know, you could get a 2wd diesel pretty cheap and it'd be good for towing on pavement. The 460 will do fine, the worst part will be fueling it. Id say if you can find a nice gasser tow rig, do it. A cc/lb with 4.10's would be sweet! Just for the weight. Ive had a couple and they always start. I just couldnt stand the fuel mileage. Like 7 is normal. Worse than a v10!!

Re: Towing with a 460?

Has to be 4wd, the truck in my sig won't be out in the central PA slop of a winter so the second unit has to be 4wd also haha.

Re: Towing with a 460?

Find an F-350, they have the solid front axle. I have a '94 F-350 cc/lb 4x4, w/ the 460, E4OD auto, & 4.10's. I average 7-8mpg. It dosen't matter if I have 4000lbs in the box, 8000lbs on the hitch or empty. The longer wheel base is nice for towing.
