Re: Welders vs Diesel Mechanics

I would think that either way you would be safe but the last thing I would want to do is weld all day. I did it for a few years. There are many jobs that get old quick and welding is one of them.

Re: Welders vs Diesel Mechanics

I agree, welding for 40+ hours a week isnt all its cracked up to be, but people will always need things welded and the country runs on diesel engines.

Re: Welders vs Diesel Mechanics

I would think there's a lot more competition in welding too.

I think there is always going to be a demand for both, as long as they make metals, and trucks...

couple trucks one fast one not

Re: Welders vs Diesel Mechanics

depends on what type of welding you're talking about. my buddy owns a shop and 80% of his work is making jigs and platforms for Sikorsky Aircraft (Helicopters), and he's got guys working 50-60 hour weeks. pipeliners i would say are 50/50, working or not and it depends on where you're located. I do general fabrication, welding, blacksmithing, and ornamental work and all my stuff swings with the economy. when people don't need it, they don't buy it. with the way the construction is supposed to turn back up, I would say welder would be a good choice. but i would say go all the way, get your 6G certs and then do what you'd like.

Re: Welders vs Diesel Mechanics

diesel mechanic for sure im currently going to school for diesel technology and the diesel industry will always be strong due to everything like food products building materials or even cars are all shipped by truck which all run on diesel. Soon all the wiring for the harnesses in these trucks are all gonna be fiber optic. there is so much new technology for these trucks that is always updated and as far as welding goes its very possible because lot of steel buildings require welding and steel is the most common building for high rise building so welding should be a safe trade into the future.

Im diesel mechanic during the day, then go teach welding at night. We have been prety slow with the economy but so has everything else. As said before both are good fields depending on geographic location, and both are here to stay.
