Talking 5 speed vs 6 speed PSD

Question about the difference between the 5 speed and the 6 speed F250's, specifically the 2000 year. I heard the 6 speed is the same as a 5 speed but it just has a granny gear with it. What dya'll know about this? I'm lookin to buy a PSD and from my research the 2000 F250 is the best, and I figure I'd get a 6 speed to help with mileage. Any input is much appreciated!!

Re: 5 speed vs 6 speed PSD

I didn't know they made the sd's in a 5spd........ But the 6spd has shown to be better than the 5spd in the obs. The overall gear ratio is close to the same. The 6spd has a better split between gears.

I'm fairly certain the SD's only came with the ZF6

2000 F250 7.3 PSD ZF6 4x4.

Re: 5 speed vs 6 speed PSD

early 99 SD's came with a 5-speed IIRC.

Current Rig:
1992 F350 Custom CCLB 4x4, 5.8 V8, 5-spd.
Previous Rig:
1986 F250 XL RCLB 4x4, 6.9, 4-spd.
The Daily Driver: 1992 Lexus LS400, 4.0 V8, 4-spd auto. She's soft, smooth, and fast, but she's a real b****.

stock manual trans in the 99 superduty was a 5 speed. 6 speed was an option.

Re: 5 speed vs 6 speed PSD

Do you know if the final gear (5th for 5 speed and 6th for six speed) ratio is about the same?

ZF-5 5.72 2.94 1.61 1.00 0.76
ZF-6 5.79 3.30 2.10 1.31 1.00 0.72

I don't know if the ZF-5 referenced is a S42 or S47. But the ZF-6 appears to be lower geared before you hit direct. OD is higher.

Those gear ratio's are for the newer 96' up s47 tranny.. I have owned both, the s47 will launch a load a hell of a lot better then the s42.. I knew folks who left early style fords for dodges back in the day, because of the much better launching of the dodge.. Ofcourse the dodge boys like to say the ford's engine was the blame.. Not so!!
