Supercharged 7.3 IDI ?

A buddy of mine showed me one of his friends truck with a 7.3 IDI with a supercharger type blower on top the motor powered by the crank . Is supercharging a IDI even possible . like is it even possible that it could be done?

Re: Supercharged 7.3 IDI ?

anything can be done with enough money.
is it economical or practical?? i doubt it.
our engines are turbocharged for a reason. the turbo is better.

A blower on an IDI would probably work pretty well. Would it be worth it for the gain? Probably not. But it would be cool.

well if he showed you a picture of it, i would assume it can be done I seen some pics over on OB about this, one with a 3.8 GM SC. He sees 2lbs at idle, overdrive the pulley and throw a turbo on there for top end and away you go, although im not sure how that exactly works and how much the heat the SC will make.

Re: Supercharged 7.3 IDI ?

I bet i would actually work pretty good. It probably would be PITA and i probably wouldnt do it to an idi but like it was said earlier, put a turbo into the equation and the instant boost down low combined with the turbo for top end boost and it would be a very sweet combo. And on another note, idk how much boost you can push with a supercharger but i would think it would make 10 psi and alot of idi dont run over that anyway so im not really seein why it wouldnt work

Re: Supercharged 7.3 IDI ?

On the note of a supercharger here is a thread with an awesome setup a guy builds and sells for Dodge Cummins. He has built two kits now and they both work well. The seconds one is nicer though. He says it tows better and really spools his big turbo well. Right now he is actually testing a third setup where he is using an Hx40 for the secondary and the SC as the primary. Its just awesome how is experimenting with so many setups. But anyway read through the thread and here are some videos.

Here are also some videos of the first kit he sold to guy in Cali. It works pretty well too.

Re: Supercharged 7.3 IDI ?

Also here is a setup on another site that I found. Check it out.

pic of a super charged 7.3 idi that's pulling - Oilburners.net

This is my setup. I just gotta get my truck from Idaho before I can finish it. This is my SC and mount. The turbo will blow into the SC and then will go to the intercooler then to the intake. It will be regulated to 20 psi. I believe that using all the extra fuel down low will allow me to add more fuel without over fueling it, thus keeping egts down. I think that would also make it a good setup for towing. Here are some pics of my setup also. My friend built a 3" cowl hood to fit it under the hood.

Re: Supercharged 7.3 IDI ?

Saw one on a 93 idi in a 69 Ford F100 this weekend. It made about 1-2lbs of boost & lit instantly.

My guess is that it makes 1-2 psi at idle. If not he definitely need to change his pulley!
