I want to upgrade my headunit but im not to crazy about any of the flip out screen units out there. Has anyone modified their dash to fit a double din? Pics would be appreciated. Thanks guys.
Yeah, that would be your best bet.. With the fact the dash pad in right there above the radio, you would be lookin to do a ton of fabbing. A person could move the HVAC to the radio DIN, then figure out how to moddify the original HVAC location for a double DIN.
With as much of a PIA as the dash is to get in and out, all the screws, and the wiring and brackets behind the dash, i wonder if it just wouldnt be easier to fab up another top section to place on top of the dash, and for go all the mess with that mod?

If i had access to metal brakes and welders i would just fab up a completly custom dash. im kinda liking the idea of cutting out the center of the dash pad and just refabbing that area
almost wonder if you could remove the ash tray relocate the hvac stuff down to there then get creative with fiber glass in the area between the radio and the old hvac spot.and get something to work
Well.. I would reckon it wouldnt be too much of a challeng to fab up something down there in the ash tray area to move components to..
The things I would be most challenged by, is the trim bar that runs along the dash under the padding.. How would one moddify it so it doesnt look awful? Next would be the support screws under the radio that hold the dash to th black plastic frame? I guess if you could work something around that, who knows!
Now there is a guy from Canada, He is on the Lightning forum. He modded
his dash to add some dash pod to his regular dash, and it looked OK. When I get home I will try to find the pics and post them.
I think he is on a few other ford truck sites. His username is spotruck. His truck build is pretty wicked.
Guess I am too much of a purist on certain things . I would never do that much surgery to the dash area unless it was to gut it to build a full on race truck. I hate my head unit thats in my truck right now but it has to wait to be replaced.
Dont be downed by others. You seen it now. Just do it. move the hvac controls up above the rear view mirror, like in suburbans and play with fiberglass. That would be quite the adventure and one of a kind. I like the thinkin
Would definitely be tricky but not impossible, and maybe expensive to make it look good.
Its been forever since I have been in an OBS, but I'm trying to remember if the top dash is padded or not? If you went up for the added space might need to get it rewrapped in some vinyl. Going down and splitting the trim might not be soo bad but would most likely need to refinish the entire trim to make it match. Cut and splice rounded ends into it like factor then sand it all out and paint it. Hvac controls will be easy if its just wiring, but if it has vacume tubes and cables it could get trickier. Worst case you would have to lengthen them all for the new location.
The HVAC are both wired and vaccume. The far right knob has the vaccume tubes, 5 IIRC.
The upper dash pad is actuall padding. There are also two 10mm nuts behind the radio bezel that help hold the dash pad on.
I agree that by moving the HVAC controls to a new location, and then cutting away the trim, reshaping the trim and dash, would be the easiest, if a person wants to take this challenge on!
