Sorta new to these forums and just bought my first Powerstroke. The truck hasn't been on the road for 5 or so years and i put the motor in from another truck with the same year. The motor is out of another 97 Powerstroke and it was an automatic truck and mine is manual. I put the power steering pump on it isn't working at all. i filled it up and couldn't see any sign of flow or movement in the fluid, so i figured that maybe the pump was bad and put another on it and it didnt change a thing. If someone could possibly help me figure out what's wrong or tell me if they've had similar issues and how they fixed it, that would be great. Thanks for your help !
I may be mistaken but I believe you will need a manual PCM. As for the PS pumps not working.....if the belt has it spinning the correct direction and the hoses aren't plugged, it should work.
The OP's truck already has a manual PCM. The only difference between the original engine and the donor is that the donor would have had a flexplate. That of course would have been replaced with a flywheel as part of the engine swap.
As for the power steering, perhaps a line is clogged, or there's a restriction in the steering box. I suppose you could loosen the high pressure line at one end or the other, and run the engine BRIEFLY (stay clear of any fluid stream), to see if any fluid shoots out. Might make a mess......
i loosened the line at the pump and steering box and nothing came out until it was completely off. My buddy told me that his vacuum pump went out and it effected his power steering?
Vacuum has no connection to power steering. That ^^^^^ sounds like a def. possibility. You could try removing the belt, turning the pump by hand, can't say for sure but I'll bet you'd notice very little to no resistance if the shaft is broken.
Yeah, the 7.3 has a separate vacuum pump for the braking system, it wouldn't affect the powersteering.
If the pump was good, then do what they said and pull the belt off and spin the pulley by hand, it will have some resistance if its still good, it is technically a hydraulic pump so it should want to push back on you.
I bet your steering box is bad. I had a new rebuilt steering box that would do what you are describing. And Yes there is a control valve I believe in the box.
i jacked the front end off the ground and steered it back and forth to try and work and gummed up parts loose and it turns nice and easy as if everything was working. i took that shock loose on the steer arms and it loosened it up some. it turns easier to the left then right, so it thinking i either have to replace the shock or drive it for a little while and let it loosen everything back up ...
its a steering dampener
"Loosen everything back up" is scary to me
It seems as if you have a bad ball joint, tie rod, and/or U joint in the front end...a stuck or bad part here and it will not turn smoothly, these parts will not "loosen" up if they are bad they need to be replaced.
