I replaced the starter relay twice thinking it was the problem. I hook it up correctly, tighten the bolts, and the truck starts perfectly for 2-5 times. Then, nothing. I get out, bridge the starter relay to start it. Starts great for 2-5 more times, then nothing. 2nd new relay, so pretty sure that's not the problem.
There's no sound, nothing, just turn the key and nothing. I then leave the key on, jump the starter relay, and it starts up fine for the next few key turns. Then nothing. It's an automatic. Could the ignition switch be going out?
You have to catch it when it fails. When it does, disconnect the single small wire terminal from the relay, and check for voltage on that wire while an assistant turns the key to START. If there's voltage, then it's the relay, or its grounding, or possibly a starter issue. If not, then the problem is indeed "upstream" - ingition switch, neutral switch, associated wiring. But it's only a valid test at the time of failure.
