Starter Relay?

1997 F250 7.3.

I replaced the starter relay twice thinking it was the problem. I hook it up correctly, tighten the bolts, and the truck starts perfectly for 2-5 times. Then, nothing. I get out, bridge the starter relay to start it. Starts great for 2-5 more times, then nothing. 2nd new relay, so pretty sure that's not the problem.

What else could it be?

Thanks much!

When it "goes bad" do you hear it thud like it's trying?
If not, your issue is somewhere else.

Like ignition switch, clutch switch if 5 speed, on the auto nss.

Could be.
Sometimes you can adjust them a little bit.
Basically have to wait until it's not starting and attack it with a voltmeter.

Yeah, it's auto.

Try starting it in neutral or hold the shifter up in park.

Do you have a volt meter or test light

You have to catch it when it fails. When it does, disconnect the single small wire terminal from the relay, and check for voltage on that wire while an assistant turns the key to START. If there's voltage, then it's the relay, or its grounding, or possibly a starter issue. If not, then the problem is indeed "upstream" - ingition switch, neutral switch, associated wiring. But it's only a valid test at the time of failure.

Yeah, the nss thing on the side of the trans. Basically tells it what gear it's in.

I think there's maybe another name for it.
