7.3 Liter Powerstroke MPG Upgrades

Hi Everyone:
A while ago I did some work on my 2001 F350 Super Duty with a 7.3L Powerstroke, auto trans, 4:11 axles, four wheel drive, crew cab and dual rear wheels. I have had the truck since it was new and it now has 117,000 miles on it. The fuel mileage has always been pretty crummy. I decide to see what I could do to improve the MPG. I made these mods:
1) I added an EGT gauge.
2) Installed an Injection pressure fooler. (since removed)
3) I replaced the Intercooler and engine valley boots.
4) Polished the Intercooler/Turbo "Y pipe".
5) And installed a 4" stainless exhaust.
I made a four part Youtube video that chronicles the whole project. Here are the links:

Please Comment, share and "Like" my videos.
Thanks, Mars
P.S. A picture is worth a thousand words and a 10 minute video has about one hundred thousand pictures in it.

I have kept close track of my fuel mileage since the truck was new. When the truck was new on long trips traveling 70-75 I got 13.5 mpg (empty) or less. When the ultra low sulfur fuel came out me MPG under the same type of driving went down to about 12.5. After all of the upgrade in the videos plus An over sized Tymer Air Filter MOD. Now I get 14.5 at 70-75. My MPG goes up the slower I drive. The best I ever got on a long trip is 18.62 on a 2750 miles trip going 55-65 . But on that trip I was running a hydrogen (HHO generator. I documented that trip in this video:

Re: 7.3 Liter Powerstroke MPG Upgrades

My mileage has recently took a nose dive as well.

Winter fuel and being due for an oil change isn't helping, but I'm not happy with it at all

Hi white7.3: The overall MPG gains from these mods was fairly small. I did get a slight seat of the pants increase in power. The performance chip (actually a fuel injector fooler) did not increase or decrease the MPG. I sent it back. I did a fairly elaborate MPG test of the various devices and posted videos on Youtube.

I have other MPG videos in a playlist called:
“HHO MPG Tests”
Go to my channel, I have the Play list set to be one of the first things you see. Here is the link:

Ummm...... wow.... ok.

Mpg boost is based on how hard you push the skinny pedal, but here are a couple that I can think of.

Modded 17* hpop/Adrenaline/stealth srp1
custom tuned chip
Different gearing
Single shot injectors
Cetane booster

You're not really doing that bad. Best I have ever gotten is 21.5. Those were pretty ideal conditions. The stuff listed isn't going to get you that much better mileage but they will help a little. My guess would be 1-3 mpgs better.

Re: 7.3 Liter Powerstroke MPG Upgrades

well I was just wondering, I've done a few diy small mods but they never really helped my fuel mileage or at least not enough to make much difference. Some of those mods seem to be more cosmetic or not really performance related but that's just my opinion. Best overall thing you can do is keep your foot out of the skinny pedal. Best I ever got was around 20-22mpg on a long trip with my cruise around 65mph.
