Flippy the Powerchoke! early 99 F350 7.3 truck flip project

My stepsons and I found a smoking deal yesterday and drove it home to the shop!!!
Early 1999 F350 cab and chassis 7.3 auto extended cab, 221K miles, no bed, runs and drives but lacks power
We will fix this truck up nice and sell it, we split on her three ways, should be a fun project, using what we have learned on our own 7.3's to revive this old girl.
The family that plays together stays together!

Paid $1500, yes that's right $1500 and drove it home 30+ miles
Everyone I introduce to you the first family flip truck, Flippy the powerchoke!

First up, do all 99 trucks have a front/rear brake caliper setup on the rear axle or is this a cab and chassis thing?
Starts and runs okay just has no power, no input from the fuel feed pedal, no smoke, just a big time lack of power.
We started by cleaning the battery terminals so she would start on her own (corrosion) battery terminals still need a re visit but at least now shes getting power enough to run.
We then removed all the intercooler piping and boots, intake spider for cleaning, signs of leaks at every clamp. So we degreased all of this and had a good look at the 7.3.
ICP has oil in the harness, ordered a new one & pigtail.
Air filter was caked full of dirt, new one on its way.
Turbo has no play in it, but compressor wheel is a bit dusted.
Map sensor feed tube had a crack in it, cut off 1/2" of the tube and re connected.
Drivers up pipe large leak at turbo manifold, can hear the leak from inside the cab
Fuel bowl full and fuel is green, new filter on its way
Coolant at level, coolant nice and clear.
Has newer block heater (at least the cord) and oil cooler looks to have been replaced.
Has newer fuel pump
Has reman alternator (yuck) single alternator
Window sticker says oil changes done at Ford dealer, so I will run a carfax for some maint history
Transmission is not stock, looks very dry and shifts wonderfully, fluid is a little burned but still red in color.
No major leaks, valley has small puddle under turbo ped. otherwise very dry on sides and under block
"Chugs" a little at idle like it has a miss, never smooths out, always there
No grey or blue smoke from exhaust when warm, just small puffs of black, seems like a stock superduty.
Tires are near new, 3.73 limited slip rear, late 98 build date.

Plans so far:
Power wash!!! so we can work on it, this thing has never been washed under the hood.
Cylinder contribution and buzz test
Fuel PSI test
Boost test (maual gauge)
Rebuild turbo with garret kit and 360 degree thrust bearing
New glowplugs
Rosewood reman injectors
Clean fuel filter screens in tank and fuel bowl
compression test while VC are off
Clean EBPS and feed tube
re seal top of engine as needed (oil rails, fuel lines, etc)
deleted pedestal and EBPV
Flatbed (found a good deal on one)
front pushbar (already have)
Detail interior, fix whatever does not work
Steering is loose, likely needs front end work
R&R drivers mirror

Sell for profit! and then go buy another.........

Re: Flippy the Powerchoke! early 99 F350 7.3 truck flip project

Looks like a good start BUT. If it's a true E99 I would look at parting it out. Then you can have an inter cooler. But then again with a little effort you could make some $$

Re: Flippy the Powerchoke! early 99 F350 7.3 truck flip project

Don't worry there will be part outs, this one is a flip! Part of what we do here is save the clean ones, I take pride in that.
We are all drooling over the parts, I need intercooler bits and a builder engine, my stepson needs a cab for his rusty 01 and my other stepson is looking at the trans, frame and axles as $$$$ for parts... but we will save this one.
Its a true E99 as far as my limited knowledge goes, build date late 98, small turbo, AB injectors
I spent 45 minutes cleaning that intake spider yesterday, drooling. I spent $500 on the truck, the spider alone would cost me $350+ on Ebay!
V8 explorers have had their day... this lot will likely be filled with title-less, blown up superduties in no time. Especially if my now grown into men stepsons and I can work together (been working on relationships since they were teens now both married with kids), this is a great start! The wives are pushing us to do this together too, maybe we can even get the kids to hand us tools :) Hands on is how I learned RBV... time to do the same with powerstrokes

Re: Flippy the Powerchoke! early 99 F350 7.3 truck flip project

If it only has one relay where the gpr is its an e99. If there is two it's a L99 motor.

I think it was for just making one backing plate to use on both sides. Saves $$$ on tooling.

Definitely snag that rear sway bar for your ex. The new owners won't miss it.

Re: Flippy the Powerchoke! early 99 F350 7.3 truck flip project

The motor is an E99 for sure. Front axle should be. You will have to check the u bolts. Are the round or square.

Re: Flippy the Powerchoke! early 99 F350 7.3 truck flip project

Where is the VIN plate? If on the front radiator support, just behind the passenger side headlight, it's an E99.

Signature file limitations keep me from sharing more information. Follow this link to find my threads: D60 RSK install, Air vent cleaning, etc.
