Battery Light stays on in dash.

Last couple of days my battery light has not turned off after starting the truck. ( some times it does but more often than not it stays on now. )

The battery gauge shows the needle slightly over half way ( maybe 14v )

The batteries are 2 months old Interstate MTP's

Re: Battery Light stays on in dash.

the plug on the alternator likes to pop out. this will turn the light on.
don't go by the gauge on the dash, you need to read voltage at the battery with a volt meter while running with the light on to tell if it is charging.

Re: Battery Light stays on in dash.

what he said!
The light on the dash illuminates when the alternator is not charging / or the alternator internal voltage regulator is not plugged in (its gets its ground through this light, so light on = no voltage regulator)
Use a volt meter you should have at least 12.5 volts at batteries with truck off, you should have 11-12V at batteries during glow plug run time and starting and once running at idle or above you should have 14.2-14.5V at the batteries. Anything under 14.2 and your alternator is not charging enough.
It is likely the alternator voltage regulator (on side of alternator) is not plugged in or the alternator has failed.
Weird you are seeing 1/2 way on the volt meter with this light on

Let us know what you find.

Re: Battery Light stays on in dash.

Thanks
Alternator is dead.

Only reading 12.05 volts during idle on my batteries and doesn't climb higher. Not sure how it started, probably got the last start out of it today. Decided to dig the raptor out of 2 feet of snow and drive it to the stealership to buy a new alternator. Got a new belt while I was at it.

Hopefully they sold me the right parts, they are terrible about that there.

Re: Battery Light stays on in dash.

check the alternator fuse that powers the voltage regulator
bench test alternator
Then buy a new one

Where might that be?

I'm trying to find a fuse diagram.

Re: Battery Light stays on in dash.

I found this listed for a 99 but likely the same
Do you have owners manual?

Looks like fuse *7 for diesel

Don't think i do. They totally changed the wiring in 2002. So that should be right for my 2001 I think.

I think its #6 or #7.. i checked 5 6 7 and 8 and they were all fine.

I'll plop the new alternator in it tomorrow. I got it to start and backed it into my heated shop :) Didn't want to change it outside.

The snow here has been just bonkers this winter..non stop.
