Shop labor hours to swap out a complete 03 7.3 long block

Anyone have access to or know what the labor hours are for swapping out a complete 03 7.3? Ford shop hours and what the actual hours should be? My truck is in the dealership and am told I need to replace my engine. Thinking of buying a supposedly very reliable complete 01 long block from yard and having them pull it and just drop it in. I know there are a lot of Mods that would be great while its out but first I can't do much of the work myself and I sure don't have the money for them to do it. Might consider a few things but money is tight. Sh... I don't really have the money for the current repairs. Just need a starting point then will go from there. Want to make sure they aren't raping me to bad and maybe I can try and keep them in check. Already got a bill of about $800 for pulling the valve covers, checking a couple injectors and doing a compression test. Was in the process of getting new injectors but cancelled that when they told me I had one bad cylinder with half the compression as all the others.

you need to take the truck to a backyard mechanic. the dealership is gonna eat you alive. i guarantee it would be over 2,000 dollars. my buddy who owns a used car lot has a guy who will change them for 300.

Re: Shop labor hours to swap out a complete 03 7.3 long block

Yea Bruce I know. Unfortunately here on the Eastern Shore of Maryland there just aren't many good Diesel mechanics that I can find. Not saying they aren't here. Twice in a row now I have been screwed by back yard mechanics and both referred. But I'm willing to try one more time once I talk with them and feel more comfortable. Yea you just about hit that one on the head. They quoted me 20 hrs labor at $2300 to do either a Factory reman or a complete used long block from a yard. I know the yard one should be less cause they don't have to pull a few parts of mine to put on it but haven't haggled with them yet over a few $$$. 20 hours just seems a lot. especially since they have already started. Hoping someone knows of a good knowledgable but yet fair mechanic Crap I'll bring the beer and man the grill and even give a hand where ever I can. I'm just not a lone wolf hands on engine kinda guy.

Thanks jbrixon, and if they get it done is 15 they still charge me the 20. Long block going back in has everything I believe. So what you think? Still 19.6?

You might go down to the regional subforum and find someone on here who is in MD or nj or de. Personally I'd take it to Marty's before I gave the dealership a dime

I just had mine out of my 2001, new pan and back in ready to start in 10 hours, its not a bad job. Find a good mechanic that you trust and have them do it.

Re: Shop labor hours to swap out a complete 03 7.3 long block

Do you know what a long block consist of? 20 hours to pull an engine, change all the parts over on to a new long block and reinstall sounds pretty good. Its not an easy job. The labor rate sounds like it may be high though...depending on your area average labor rate is about 60-90 an hour with an average of what we see @ $85.00 x 20 Hours = $1700.00. So I can only imagine they are adding in fluids, hoses, gaskets etc..

Here is a picture of our ATK 7.3 Diesel engine long block for those who do not know what it consist of..you have to swap all external parts over including EFI, Covers, Accessories etc on top of pulling and reinstalling.

Re: Shop labor hours to swap out a complete 03 7.3 long block

Yes even if they get the job done in 15 hrs they still charge you the 20. That's how they make up for all the jobs that took 4 hrs but the book said they can only charge 2.
It costs a ton of money to buy all those tools that let's them shave a couple hours off a big job or a couple of minutes off a small one.
