Early 99 f250 6 speed no speedo and abs light on.

I have an early 99 F250 6 speed with rear only abs. The speedo doesn't work and the abs light is on. I swapped the vss and that didn't fix it. I checked the grounds behind the DS headlight and behind the fuse cover. They were good. I jacked up the rear and had someone spin the wheels whlile I watched the tone ring. It's not missing teeth or dirty. The vss sensor doesn't have any metal on it. I have tested the wiring harness from the firewall back to the vss plug. red/white and green/black wires. I tested the old vss sensor with my ohm meter and it's set at 2000k. The old sensor tested at 1.1 and the new sensor tested at 2.0. I set the meter to 20v dc and passed a wrench infront of the sensor and the reading swings from 0.00 to 0.03. I have unhooked the batteries for 20 minuters and nothing have fixed the issue. I am pulling my hair out on this thing. Where is the abs module on this truck and can anyone else think of anything to check?

Re: Early 99 f250 6 speed no speedo and abs light on.

Just an update. I pulled the main plug off of the RABS system under the battery. I was able to test my wiring back to the vss plug and it was good. Does this mean the RABS unit has gone bad and I should order a new unit?

You probably have either a psom or gem module problem and not an issue at all with your vss or rabs module.

The psom is a module that is part of the instrument cluster. If it is bad the whole cluster has to be replaced. The gem module is an electronic control module located directly behind the fuse panel under the dash. It is quite common for the windshield to leak directly onto them which shorts them out. You can pull the module and look for signs of water or corrosion.

I pulled the GEM and no signs of water at all. Autozone tried to scan it for codes and said there was something wrong with the obd 2 port. Would this have anything to do with the speedo/abs? I noticed my milage isn't counting either.

I believe that the rear speed sensor can cause your abs light to come on and that would be the reason for no speedo? Someone please correct me if I'm wrong..

Part store scanners don't work on powerstrokes at all. You need a high end scanner on these trucks. There is nothing wrong with the OBD II port in your truck, there is a malfunction in the parts jockeys head.

Stoker04, Yes that could cause that problem but as the OP stated already is that he has checked everything from the sensor forward and it is reading correctly and he has tried a new sensor as well.

Sorry about that...I need to open my eyes a little more. Like speeddemon31176 said your going to need a better scan tool like Auto Enginuity or Fords IDS software.
