2003 6.0 basic performance upgrades

Hey guys I need some help on a 2003 6.0

ford f350 srw 4x4

Im just looking for some simple performance modifications and other things.

im looking to do an Egr delete, an sct tune, intake(if necessary), an exhaust(no cats or muffler) and some gauges to monitor everything

Intake: ive heard many people say the stock intake and filter are awesome and there is no need to change it. opinions?

Tune-Sct: okay, ive decided this is the way i want to go because you can go to different peoples' tunes and what not, but the question is, which one is best for me? can someone break them down? i saw the list thats a sticky, but i need guidance!

-im not really ever going to tow, im just a student who likes driving fast. if i need to elaborate more, please let me know.

Egr delete: another thing im not too sure of what to do. Should i delete? should i block? bypass? which delete should i go for? again, im not looking to take my truck over 500hp or anything intense like that, so i dont need the best one, just reliable. But if it is essential to spend the money to get something that is worth it, I get it.

Exhaust: Id like a five inch, turbo back, but if five isnt needed, let me know guys! I dont want cats, or a muffler, ever. so if there is a system that doesnt come with either id love to know about it! and as for the material i dont need stainless, aluminized is perfect.

gauges: i can handle it lol

Any other upgrades/mods im missing?

and eventually id like to maybe get a Garrett powermax, dunno if I need to do more for it..

thanks guys!

Re: 2003 6.0 basic performance upgrades

For a stock truck with stock injectors I would keep the stock airfilter, run a sct tune, I prefer the x2 or x3 for the tuner and delete the egr. If I were to go with digital gauges I would get a edge insight either cts or cs based on you wallet and preferences. If I was going to go analog gauges I would look at isspro or autometer and monitor egt, fuel psi, boost (03-04), coolant temp and oil temp. Tranny temp if I planned to tow. The stock air filter is fine for the stock sticks in my opinion. As for the exhaust I'd just straight pipe the 3.5" anything larger is not might give you some egt reduction but it isn't going to be anything drastic. Mainly past the straight pipe 3.5" your just going to get louder and 5" will be the loudest

Full EGR delete is the best way to go. I'd save your money on intake for later down the road. Any of your top tuners can tune your truck on SCT so thats not a issue...if you have a EGR delete just let em know and they can put that in the tune. 5in isnt needed, 4in will get the job done...the 5in has deeper tone.

I'm a 7.3 guy & have never owned a 6.0, but look into head studs too. If they can be done without pulling the heads, it would make sense, since you'll already have the top of the motor torn down to do the EGR delete. I think even with just a hot tune, you might be in danger of popping a head gasket; seen plenty of trucks w/stock tuning do it.

Re: 2003 6.0 basic performance upgrades

exhaust is all about preference I wanted big. I strait piped stock exhaust couldnt keep egts under control and sound was nasty to me went with 4 inch worked great for egt but was a higher pinched sound at high rpm I didn't like it so bought 5 inch strait piped and it sounds like a muscle car real deep rumble! I wouldnt put anything else on again. I didn't notice a drop in horse power or mileage with the 5 either like everyone said I would

Re: 2003 6.0 basic performance upgrades

I bought my sct x2 used and started with the spartan archive tunes. I have a kem tune and it shifts great and is a good street tune. Mike spent quite a bit of time discussing tuning and the 6.0 in general. That tune though just dosent feel as powerful or have the throttle response of the hybrid race. Overall that has been my favorite tune I just wish it shifted a little better. I do want to try tony wildmans tunes, chris@ tsd's tunes, and matt@ gearhead. Every one says brand x is better than y and so forth. It seems though that thru the years eric@idp has been one of the most recommended though. Matt @ gearhead has been showing a lot of popularity with his tunes and chris@ tsd seems to be building popularity with his tunes. He is actually doing some sweet stuff with stonepushers truck. I should have gotten some tunes when we had the gtg last fall. Buying new tunes though hasn't been very high on the priority list... As for egr delete I would get a blown egr cooler weld up the ends and re install it. It will pass a visual inspection and will fit like factory since it is essentially a stock ford/ international part should be cheaper as well vs. A kit
