4 inch vs 5 inch, turbo back vs cat back

Just wondering some opinions on Aftermarket exhaust for my 6.0, I've read that 6.0's don't benefit much from the bigger down pipe? True? Also whats the benefit in eliminating the cat. converter? Also I've been looking at a Diamond Eye stainless system, Are they any good? I tow a two horse trailer once a week and Enclosed snow trailer for trips up north and out west(1000 miles+) and not a big fan of loud cab noise, So I was leaning toward a mufflered system. Any comments would be great, Thanks GG

If you didn't have your 6.0 what would you spend all your money on?????

The cat is just restricting it. And I would do a turbo back.

A bigger downpipe will help keep EGTs a little lower. If your truck is stock, you won't notice much difference in power. The bigger exhaust starts helping (performance wise) once you put tunes on and upping the power in other ways.

IMO, go turbo back. Pipe size is entirely up to you. You won't gain any more power going to 5". The bigger pipe will make the exhaust tone a fair amount deeper though.

Re: 4 inch vs 5 inch, turbo back vs cat back

If you have to smog your truck, you need to leave your CAT in. I live in cali, so I have to leave my CAT in, and do a CAT back exhaust. With a turn down under the cab, and a hollow CAT, the powerstroke can be roudy sometimes. I plan on leaving the CAT, running 4" CAT back with a muff. This will keep the noise to a minimal, and hopefully still keep the EGT's cool when towing and tuned.

Re: 4 inch vs 5 inch, turbo back vs cat back

I just did a 4 inch turbo back with the muff on my uncle's truck. He tows a trailer with it and he loves the sound. It sounds stock until about 2500rpm's then you can hear it.

A buddy of mine had a 5 inch turbo with no muff and an 8" tip and you could hear him coming from blocks away.

Hope this helps

I'd go with the turbo back system. If you need to have a cat on for inspections, there are aftermarket 4" and 5" diesel cats for @ $250-$300 for less restrictions. or as stated before, you could hollow out yours.

Or notice pretty close to the same egts as a 4" by removing the muffler and either ditching the cat or hollowing it out. The cost is a lot less. The 3.5 inch exhaust with out a muffler or a cat is sufficent for a stock stick truck in my opinion.

Re: 4 inch vs 5 inch, turbo back vs cat back

cat is bad... very restrictive, but if it's necessary for emissions inspections then leave it and do what they said (get a less restrictive one) diamond eye or MBRP have sweet turbo back 4" or 5" systems with mufflers included, you can turn the muffler in whichever direction you want for a little more noise or less noise, if you want little cab noise then go with the turbo back muffler system

I have a 4" stainless turbo back Magnaflow with muffler. Very happy with it. I wanted a muffler so my 4 yr old daughter could still sleep in there when rolling. Works great

Re: 4 inch vs 5 inch, turbo back vs cat back

My boy loves the sound of the powerstroke. He falls asleep in my truck more often than my wife's quiet Acura. When we go through tunnels, he always tells me to "go loud".

OP, sounds like a muffler is what your wanting.
